About Camp Jumoke

Jumoke (pronounced Joo-MOH-keh) is a Nigerian word which means “Everyone Loves The Child. ”

Camp Jumoke was founded in 1994 by The Association for the Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences (AABHS) and is dedicated to enriching the lives of children who have Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). In its first year of operation, 40 children attended the camp for two weeks.

Why the Turtle
...
In ancient cultures, the turtle was revered as a symbol of strength, survival and perseverance; some also believed they possessed mystical healing powers. For these reasons, Camp Jumoke has chosen the turtle to symbolize its spirit of survival — the struggle and strength of every child afflicted with sickle cell disorder, and the desire to attain a long life for those living with the disease.
