The Beverly Mascoll Scholarship

As a volunteer-run, charitable organization Camp Jumoke relies on the support of both businesses and individuals in order to fulfill our goal of enriching the lives of children with Sickle Cell Disease.

Since Camp Jumoke’s inception, one of our biggest supporters was the late Beverly Mascoll.  Mrs. Mascoll was a well-known and respected philanthropist and businesswoman who strongly believed in the vision of Camp Jumoke and provided much financial and moral support to the organization.

At Camp Jumoke’s 10th Anniversary Gala in September 2004, two Camp Jumoke campers were the first to be awarded scholarships from Camp Jumoke in the memory of Mrs. Mascoll.   With the receipt in 2005 of a substantial donation from the Beverly Mascoll Foundation, it was our honour to formally launch the Beverly Mascoll Scholarship Fund.  This annual scholarship was awarded for the second time at the Camp Jumoke Brunch on September 18th, 2005.

The Beverly Mascoll Scholarship is a $1,500 award designed to help alleviate the cost of post-secondary tuition and/or books for the recipient.  Along with the cash award, the recipient is then appointed as the Camp Jumoke poster child for the upcoming year (from the current year’s Annual General Meeting until the next year’s AGM).

In order to be eligible for the Beverly Mascoll Scholarship, a candidate must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Candidate must have Sickle Cell Disease
  • Candidate must be a current Camp Jumoke camper or can be a former camper if candidate is not/did not attend the current camp session due to illness
  • Candidate must write an essay on either of the following topics

Ø      Why I should be considered for the Beverly Mascoll Scholarship

Ø      Attending Camp Jumoke has allowed me to obtain the following experience…

  • Candidate must attend and pass an oral interview conducted by a panel of Camp Jumoke board members/volunteers
  • Candidate must submit their latest school report card
  • Candidate must not have previously been awarded the Beverly Mascoll Scholarship award by Camp Jumoke
  • Candidate must understand that, if she/he receives this award, she/he will be the Camp Jumoke poster child for the upcoming year and must be willing and available to represent Camp Jumoke at designated events

Given Mrs. Mascoll’s support of Camp Jumoke and the importance in which she held the cause of higher education, we at Camp Jumoke believe that this scholarship fund honours her memory in a way that she would have fully approved.
